What is osteoarthritis?

First and foremost OA is a inflammatory condition that causes:

  • Cartilage deterioration
  • Loss of joint space
  • Bone changes
  • Pain
  • Disability
  • Instability
What are the symptoms?
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Buckling or locking
  • Popping or cracking sounds
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Stiffness
What can I do if I have osteoarthritis?

There are many things you can do at home to try and decrease the pain such as weight loss, icing the knee, or using anti inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen.

What do I do if these things do not work for me?

The next step would be prescription anti-inflammatory medications or cortisone injections. The downside to this is these treatment’s can have adverse effects.

Anti-inflammatory medications can cause kidney and liver damage, elevate blood pressure, and increase your risk of a heart attack by up to 50%. Cortisone injections are toxic and though help with inflammation they also cause increased damage to the cartilage in the knee.

Ultimately, these treatments do not reduce the risk that the knee joint will fail to the point that the only option is a joint replacement surgery.

What are the risks of a knee replacement?
  • Knee replacements are not a permanent fix and may need to be repeated
  • Replacement failure (pain is worse after the knee is replaced)
  • Anesthesia complications
  • Infection and hospital admission
  • Legs may be different lengths after surgery
  • Significant loss of knee flexibility
  • Damage to surrounding arteries, veins, and nerves
Do I have any other options?

Yes! The treatments we offer help in restoring the damaged joint cartilage, reduce inflammation, and help lubricate the knee to improve function and decrease your pain. Our treatments are FDA approved and are covered by most Medicare plans with no out of pocket costs.

So, if you have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in your knees, and are wanting to avoid knee replacement surgery, we are here for you!
